Blackheath Prep School Library & Classrooms
Client - Blackheath Prep School
Value - £139000
Contract Period : 16 weeks
A listed chapel in the grounds of a school which is itself in a conservation area was transformed into a warm comfortable library for the children of Blackheath Prep School. An adjoining former stable block used as stores was converted to two bright cheerful classrooms.
The sympathetic transformation was carried out by Waingap to retain all the attractive features of the existing buildings.
The floor of the chapel, which was on varying levels, was removed & replaced with a solid beech floor on one level, with a disabled ramp being formed at the entrance.
The heating elements were concealed under the perimeter bookcases & a new gas boiler was installed in a service area which served the new library & the two classrooms.
The lighting was suspended from the roof on wires to give the required levels for reading & feature uplighters lit up the beauty of the chapel roof construction.
An extension was constructed, in sympathetic materials, to the stable block & all existing finishes stripped out.
The walls were insulated & lined & suspended ceilings with Cat II lighting gave a more modern feel to the interior.
The floors were insulated & screeded & finished with a hardwearing Polyflor vinyl timber effect strip flooring. Pastel coloured walls were the final touch.
